If professionals are still chasing income in their seventies, what exactly are they teaching us about freedom?
This isn’t just about financial advisors.
It applies to consultants, executives, entrepreneurs, anyone speaking about success, independence, or retirement.
Because people are watching.
And they’re asking:“Is this where this path leads?”
Now, to be fair, there are professions where people never really “retire.”
Entertainers, artists, creators…many of them stay active until the very end.
But here’s the difference:
They’re not working because they have to.They’re working because they want to.
Their craft is identity. Their work is expression.
That’s not dependence.That’s devotion.
But in most professions, the promise is different.
We talk about:
Financial independence
Time, freedom
The ability to step away
So when someone cannot step away, it creates a different kind of question.
Because there’s a difference between:
✔ Living your purpose
❗ Needing the paycheck
And people can tell the difference.
Across every profession, the recurring fact is:
You don’t just teach outcomes, you model them.
So the question isn’t: “Are you still working?”
It’s:“Do you have the freedom not to?”
This idea, living with intention, not obligation, is something I explore in Prime Time Living: A Baby Boomer’s Guide to Purpose, Passion, Fulfillment and Legacy.
