On September 4, 1979, at 18 years old, I received my first driver’s licence.
It was a simple paper document, completed by hand, stamped by the licensing authority and issued for a fee of eight dollars. My photograph was attached, and the entire document carried the unmistakable marks of that period.
Forty-seven years later, my current driver’s licence looks completely different. It is digitally produced, more secure and designed for a modern society.
Seeing these two licences side by side shows how much has changed over the years.
The young man in the first photograph could not have imagined the road ahead. He could not have known the places he would travel, the people he would meet, the responsibilities he would carry or the lessons life would teach him.
Over those 47 years, cars became more advanced. Roads changed. Technology transformed how we communicate, work and conduct everyday business. The process of obtaining and renewing a driver’s licence also became very different.
But the greatest changes took place within the person holding it.
Time brings experience. It teaches patience, deepens understanding and changes the way we view success, relationships and purpose. Some lessons come through achievement. Others come through disappointment, loss, responsibility and the ordinary experiences of life.
A driver’s licence gives us permission to operate a vehicle, but experience teaches us how to handle the journey.
Looking at these two photographs reminds me that ageing is more than a physical process. It represents the distance travelled, the challenges overcome and the opportunities we have received to grow.
The young man in 1979 had hopes for the future. The man in 2026 carries memories, experience and a greater appreciation for the value of time.
The road has changed.
The vehicle has changed.
The driver has changed.
And the journey continues.
Time changes many things, but it also gives us the opportunity to become wiser, more purposeful and more appreciative of each stage of life.
