Winning the Rat Race… But Missing the Point

“Even if you win the rat race, you’re still a rat.” — Lily Tomlin

It’s a bold statement, but one that deserves reflection.

We live in a world that rewards motion: promotions, income growth, titles, and recognition. From early on, many of us are conditioned to believe that success is about how fast we climb and how far we go.

But what if the race itself is the problem?

The “rat race” is more than hard work, it’s a cycle of constant striving, comparison, and external validation. And while you may succeed by those standards, many people quietly experience something else:

• Burnout
• Disconnection
• A lingering sense of “Is this all there is?”

Because winning a race that lacks meaning still leaves you running in circles.

Achievement vs. Fulfillment

Achievement is visible and measurable. It earns applause.
Fulfillment is internal and deeply personal. It brings peace.

Too often, we spend years mastering achievement while neglecting fulfillment, only to realize later that something essential is missing.

This is one of the core ideas I explore in my book, Prime Time Living: A Baby Boomer’s Guide to Purpose, Passion, Fulfillment and Legacy.

The book is not about abandoning success, but redefining it.

A Better Question

Instead of asking:
“Am I winning?”

Ask:
“Am I running the right race?”

That single shift can move you from:
• Comparison → Clarity
• Pressure → Purpose
• Busyness → Meaningful living

Designing a Life That Matters

The later stages of life are not meant to be a winding down but a powerful reawakening.

A time to:
• Reconnect with purpose
• Strengthen meaningful relationships
• Build a legacy that extends beyond finances
• Align your daily actions with your deepest values

Because fulfillment doesn’t come from outrunning others it comes from understanding yourself.

Take the Next Step

If this message resonates with you, I invite you to go deeper.

Take the step. Redefine your race. Live with purpose.

Are You Still Riding a Dead Horse?

There is an old saying: “When you discover you are riding a dead horse, the best strategy is to dismount.” Simple advice. But surprisingly difficult to follow. In business and in life, we sometimes continue investing in something long after the evidence suggests it is...
