The Human Side of Insurance: Compassion in Crisis

A few days before Hurricane Melissa struck, I shared some thoughts on preparation and protection, how insurance is a promise we put in place before we ever need it.

Now, as we witness the storm’s aftermath, I’m reminded of another fact:
The real measure of that promise is revealed after the storm, in compassion, connection, and care.

In the days following Hurricane Melissa, we’ve seen not only destruction but also extraordinary humanity. Neighbors helping neighbors. Strangers offering food, shelter, and hope. And quietly, across living rooms and offices, advisors, claims teams, and community leaders reaching out with one simple question:
“Are you okay?”

That’s the human side of insurance.
It’s not just about policies or payouts, it’s about presence. About showing up when people are most vulnerable. About standing with families as they begin to rebuild what was lost.

Preparation gives us security before a crisis; compassion sustains us after it.
When both work together, they create resilience, financial, emotional, and communal.

After 35 years in this profession, I’ve come to see that insurance, at its heart, is an act of love. It says, “I care enough to plan ahead, and I’ll stand beside you when the unexpected happens.”

As we rebuild from Hurricane Melissa, may we remember that every policy is more than a contract, it’s a commitment to humanity.
Before the storm, we prepare.
During the storm, we endure.
After the storm, we heal together.

At Plan for Purpose, that’s what drives us: aligning financial protection with human compassion, so that purpose always leads the way.
